Your Google Business Profile just became your most important AI search asset
Google is turning local Knowledge Panels into AI Overviews. Your Google Business Profile no longer feeds an algorithm — it is the answer. What changed and what to do now.
Your Google Business Profile just became your most important AI search asset
I watched a local business Knowledge Panel turn into an AI Overview today. Not a lab test or a keynote demo. An observable change in live Google Search, reported by Ben Fisher and confirmed by Barry Schwartz on Search Engine Roundtable this morning.
If you run a local business, this changes how important your Google Business Profile is. It no longer feeds a ranking algorithm that then displays results. Your profile is the answer.
What exactly changed
Google is replacing traditional local Knowledge Panels with AI Overviews. Instead of seeing a panel with hours, reviews, and address, users now see an AI-generated response that includes that data, with a Show more button that opens an AI Mode-style chat interface.
Barry Schwartz at SER replicated it himself. The AI Overview showed business profile data including services and description. The information was mostly correct, though with some outdated fields.
This is not a cosmetic change. It is the merger of two surfaces that used to be separate: the local Knowledge Panel and Google Search's AI layer.
The data backing it up
Profound research, cited by Search Engine Land on July 15, 2026, found that citations to google.com in AI Mode rose 8.4x between April 15 and June 30, 2026. Almost the entire increase came from two formats: Google Business Profile cards and Product Knowledge Panels. Google is citing its own version of your business information directly inside AI answers.
A May 2026 study found that 28.5% of businesses in the traditional local pack do not appear at all in AI Mode's version of local results for the same search. Not lower. Gone.
And BrightLocal reported that use of generative AI tools for local recommendations jumped from 6% to 45% year over year. 68% of consumers will only use a business rated four stars or higher.
Why your profile is no longer optional
Before, an incomplete Google Business Profile meant you did not show up in the map pack. Now it means that when someone searches for your type of business, the AI Overview generates an answer without you. It does not rank you lower. It just does not mention you.
The mechanics are straightforward: Google's AI Overviews use the same Search systems that power local results. Your profile feeds those systems. If your profile is incomplete, vague, or outdated, the AI Overview has less to work with. If it is complete and accurate, it has everything it needs to include you.
This is what changed: before, your profile was one of many signals. Now it is the primary source the AI Overview uses to build its answer about local businesses.
What you need to do now
You do not need a hack or a new tool. You need your profile in the condition the AI can actually use.
1. Verify and complete every field. Categories, services, hours, description, attributes. Google explicitly states that complete and verified profiles are more likely to appear in search results. This applies to AI Overviews too, because the AI reads the same data.
2. Update hours and services. The AI Overview Schwartz saw showed mostly correct information, but with outdated service details. If you changed hours, added a service, or moved locations, update the profile before the AI memorizes the old version.
3. NAP consistency everywhere. Name, address, and phone number must be identical across your website, LocalBusiness schema, directories, and GBP. Google reconciles sources during query fan-out. If your data does not match, the AI has less confidence you are the right business and may describe you generically instead of naming you.
4. Ask for descriptive reviews. Reviews now feed directly into what the AI Overview writes about your business. "Showed up on time and fixed the problem" says more than "great service." When a customer has a positive experience, ask them to describe what specifically went well. The words they use are the ones the AI repeats.
5. Check what the AI says about you. Search your business by name and category in AI Mode. If a card with your information appears, that is the citation Profound documented. If it does not appear, or appears with incorrect information, your profile needs work.
What has not changed
The AI Overview does not replace the map pack. It sits above it. Direct clicks, calls, and directions still work the same way. What changed is that there is now a block of AI-generated text before the user reaches your listings. On a phone, that block can take up the entire first screen.
Your website still matters for everything else: trust, service depth, and any search where the profile card does not cover the question. But for the first interaction, your GBP is now your business card in front of the AI.
The reality
You cannot control what the AI Overview says about your business. You can influence the information the AI uses to generate that answer. The difference is that before you worked to rank better in Google. Now you work to make sure the AI has the correct information when someone asks about you.
It is a shift from optimizer to trusted source. And the business that figures this out first gains an advantage that compounds, because the AI remembers and adapts its responses based on the consistency of the data it finds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What changed with Google's Knowledge Panels?
Google started converting local Knowledge Panels (Google Business Profiles) into AI Overviews. Instead of showing just the panel with hours and reviews, it now generates an AI response that pulls your profile data directly into the AI Overview, with a Show more button that opens an AI Mode-style chat interface.
Do I need special markup to appear in local AI Overviews?
No special markup is required. Google says AI Overviews use the same Search systems that already power local rankings. What works is keeping your profile complete, verified, and accurate: correct categories, updated hours, recent reviews, and consistent NAP across all sources.
Do customers still click the map pack after seeing an AI Overview?
Yes, but behavior changed. The AI Overview occupies the top of the screen and answers the question before the user reaches the map pack. It does not eliminate clicks, but it changes how much context you need to provide before someone chooses you.
